Related work: 6 Character Sonnets by Eric Yip, Op. 21

6 Character Sonnets by Eric Yip was originally written for medium voice, flute, tenor saxophone, and piano. These six poems are, in their own way, sonnets based on Chinese characters, which share a preoccupation with strangeness, deniability, and the unease and thrill of moving between places, languages, and bodies. The fourth in the cycle,〈譯 / Translate〉explores the inevitability of language barriers and, by extension, the untranslatability of one's lived experience.
